2018-2020 LEAD ARTIST, SCOTLAND

An artist-led, Creative Europe funded project exploring post-industrial waterfront heritage in six European river cities. Memory of Water allowed for the development and dissemination of best practice for socially-engaged artworks and for organisations working in the context of community development and urban planning.

Lead partners from six countries collaborated on a programme that included four ‘City Lab’ seminars, and six international residencies, delivered over two years. Artists worked with local communities, urban planners, politicians, and other stakeholders in the river cities of Levadia, Gdańsk and Govan. In each of these three cisties, artists were hosted during a week-long ‘Development Residency’, followed by a period of remote research (between 3-9 months) and a ‘Delivery Residency’ where creative interventions were staged.

Partners: Intercult in Sweden, Stad Ostend in Belgium, the Municipality of Levadia in Greece, Nadbaltyckie Centrum Kultury in Poland, Fablevision in Scotland, and Ormston House in Ireland.

Artists: Ira Brami, Mary Conroy, Jonas Myrstrand, Siegfried Vynck and Iwona Zając.

For Memory of Water, Beall collaborated with local people to create bespoke creative interventions in each place:

  • Let the River Take It in Levadia Greece
  • Glass Water in Gdansk
  • Through the Wringer in Govan/Glasgow, Scotland
